One year at my work, for some reason moral was down. Sales weren’t going well and everyone was in a bit of a funk. The lack of motivation was very relevant in the office. We needed to come up with something that would motivate the team back into full swing.

My boss, one week, came in with a box full of awards trophy. He decided to hand out trophies to all the employees. There was anything from cleanest desk to most fashionable dresser. It was just what we needed to get motivated. Everyone displayed their trophies on their desks as a reminder that they do a great job.

My nephew had his year playing baseball. He was a natural talent at the game. It was very cute to see him in his little baseball outfit and bat in hand. All the kids were very cute to watch, but my nephew was the cutest.

At the end of the season they had put together and awards ceremony for all the kids. The coaches had purchased youth trophies for all the kids. They had everything from MVP to most improved player. It was quit a sight to see all the little kids get all excited about their trophies. Of course my nephew got the MVP trophy. He could not stop grinning from ear to ear.

When it came down to the end of the season, and as I was looking for trophies online, I came across a trophy that said “It’s What You Do and Who You Are…..You’re the Best at Both!” It was perfect for the coaches of my daughter’s soccer team. They put in so much time and energy with the kids it was fitting to get them that particular trophy with that particular title. It was well received by the coaches. They where very touched.

My daughter has a lot of different trophies for sports. Most of them are sports trophies. She has a shelf that is covered with basketball trophies for being a point guard, softball trophies for being a first basemen, and even T-ball trophies for most hits in a game. She is extremely proud of every single one and takes great care of them all.

Her most-prized possessions are her soccer trophies. When she first started to play she didn’t quite know if she was going to like it. She started as a sweeper. It wasn’t her favorite position to say the least. It involved too much running, as she put it. So, the coach decided to put her in as the goalie. She was amazing as the goalie. She got quite a few MVP trophies for that position.

As a former resident of Connecticut, March Madness 2011 has had me jumping for joy! Both the men and women’s basketball teams have advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Division I tournament. Obviously, the star players of both teams have contributed greatly to each team’s successes during the regular and post-season, and have been awarded accordingly.

Kemba Walker of the men’s team and of the women’s team were both named Associated Press All-America first teams. They were also selected to the John Wooden All-America first teams. Kemba can add the Bob Cousy Award to his many accolades, in addition to being named the MVP for the Big East Championship tournament. Moore has also won trophies, such as the State Farm Wade Trophy Player of the Year, and an ESPY for Best Female College Athlete.

Each year, the National Basketball Association awards a Sportsmanship Award to a player who most “exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court – ethical behavior, fair play, and integrity.” The WNBA has a similar award called the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. The NHL also has a sportsmanship award called the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, although part of being eligible for the trophy is excellence in play.

The selection for the starts with each of the 30 NBA teams nominating one player. From the 30 nominees a panel selects six divisional award winners. At the end of the regular season, NBA players cast a vote ranking the divisional winners, to determine should receive the prestigious sports trophy. Points are awarded by ranking (11 points for first place, 9 points for second place, etc.). The player with the most total points, regardless of the number of first place votes, wins the trophy. The 2009-2010 winner was Grant Hill, a Forward for the Phoenix Suns.

Just before bowl game season each winter, there is a ton of speculation surrounding which college football player will win the coveted Heisman Trophy. The award has been given annually since 1935. Here are a few fun facts you may not have known about the Heisman Trophy.

For starters, the trophy was modeled after Ed Smith, a football player for the now defunct NYU team. It was not until 1982 that Smith realized he had been used as the model for the trophy. Did you also know that Archie Griffin of Ohio State is the only player to receive the award twice, first in 1974 and then again in 1975? Steve Spurrier, a former Florida Gators quarterback, gave his Heisman Trophy to the university which caused the student government to raise funds for a replacement for Spurrier. Because of his generous actions, two Heisman Trophies are made each year: one for the player, and one for his school.

As a youth basketball coach and a parent of a young athlete, I’ve heard both sides of the participation trophy debate. On the one hand, a participation trophy is a sign of encouragement for a child. It shows them that their hard work, effort, and sportsmanship are appreciated.

Opponents of giving out participation trophies claim that doing so adds to a culture that diminishes the value of winning. As George Carlin lamented, we have no losers, just “the last winner.” For my part, I continue to give out a youth basketball trophy to every member of my young elementary school age squad, whether they win the league championship or not. I don’t believe that doing so has any detrimental effect on the kids; at such a young age, fostering good sportsmanship and building skill level is an achievement that should be rewarded.

My mom never does anything straight forward. There always has to be a twist otherwise whatever activity we’re doing isn’t “fun enough.” Many might find this annoying, but as a kid, I found that it made my mom the cool parent among my friends. Birthday parties were especially exciting.

For my eighth birthday I had a duck pin bowling party. I don’t know how my mom swung it, but she managed to get the manager to turn out the normal lights and put on the black lights and disco balls normally reserved for Friday and Saturday night late night bowling. She had us do all sorts of ridiculous scavenger hunts, freeze dancing, and obstacle courses in addition to bowling. At the end of the evening there were bowling ball awards given out to every child instead of a goodie bag full of cheap toys. Of course, being the birthday girl, I got the biggest trophy of all.

As a child, I played in my town’s girls’ soccer league. After the coach tried us out at different positions, it was decided that my predominant position would be sweeper. Now, in regulation soccer there are four defensive positions, but in my youth league there were only three positions. Those were left and right wingbacks and sweeper. As the sweeper I was in charge of calling the defensive shots on the field.

At the end of the season each girl on the team was given a soccer trophy. For my efforts as sweeper and leader of the defense, I was awarded the Most Valuable Player trophy. I was very proud of my achievement, even though everyone got an award for something they did on the field. Still, I keep my childhood soccer trophy with my collection of awards from high school and beyond.
